About the Concert

For Mario Brunello, the cello is not just an instrument for the concert hall, but a mobile companion on a quest for existential expansiveness. As a “hiking guide”—in both the figurative and literal senses—Brunello breaks down the boundaries between art and nature. Anyone who wants to experience him embarks on an expedition: with his cello on his back, he leads his audience to mountain peaks so they can experience music anew there, in the thin air of silence.

Mario Brunello

Violoncello and Tour Guide

In 1986, Mario Brunello became the first European to win the Tchaikovsky Competition and has collaborated with conductors such as Muti, Mehta and Abbado. As a pioneer of the cello piccolo, he has explored violin masterpieces from Bach to Vivaldi and released a highly acclaimed recording series of all Bach sonatas and partitas. He directs the Arte Sella and I Suoni delle Dolomiti festivals.

A musical excursion will take you to Mario Botta’s architectural masterpiece. The church was built between 1992 and 1996 on the site of the Baroque church destroyed by an avalanche in 1986, and it symbolizes man’s resistance to nature’s destructive forces.
