Concert information
Lucas and Arthur Jussen grew up in a musical environment in Hilversum. Their mother teaches transverse flute, and their father is a percussionist in the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. It is likely that they did their first finger exercises as early as in the stroller. As their mother tells it, the two brothers made almost identical progress at the piano from the very beginning, so much so that they were hardly distinguishable.
Today, they conquer the world’s greatest concert halls with their virtuosity and charisma. Felix Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E Major is a stroke of genius, composed when he was only fourteen years old. The young composer gave it to his sister, Fanny, for her 18th birthday, and premiered it with her. Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 6, also called “The Little C Major,” marks a turning point in his output. At the time of composition, Vienna was engulfed in a“Rossini fever,” an irrepressible enthusiasm for his operas, including “The Barber of Seville.” A hallmark of Rossini was the famous crescendo, in which the musical movement gradually accelerates and intensifies. Schubert, too, could not escape this fascination. His admiration for Rossini’s timbral originality, melodic grace, and cantabile lines is clearly reflected in the Sixth Symphony.

The Artists

Finnegan Downie Dear
Conductor
Finnegan Downie Dear studied musicology at Cambridge and piano at the Royal Academy of Music. In 2020, he won the Mahler Competition organized by the Bamberger Symphoniker. As an opera conductor, he works at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden , the Royal Opera House, and the Opéra de Lyon. Camerata Salzburg
In 1952, Bernhard Paumgartner founded one of the world’s most renowned chamber orchestras. From the outset, under the baton of this Mozart specialist, the Camerata Salzburg dedicated itself primarily to the works of the Salzburg composer. As an integral part of the Salzburger Festspiele and the Mozartwoche, it performs at the Mozarteum and in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls.

Lucas & Arthur Jussen
Pianos
Lucas and Arthur Jussen, born in 1993 and 1996, are among the most sought-after piano duos. Even as children, they performed for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Having won numerous awards, they are now exclusive artists with Deutsche Grammophon and give concerts worldwide, both as a duo and with leading orchestras. Their captivating ensemble playing is regarded as energetic, symbiotic and tonally sophisticated.
Venue information: Chiesa San Francesco, Locarno
Chiesa San Francesco in Locarno, dating back to the 13th century, is more than a historical monument: it is a living sounding board where history, art, and music converge. It is one of classicAscona’s most fascinating venues and offers a worthy setting for orchestral and choral concerts. The special features of this monument of sacred art are the 18th-century frescoes by the Locarnese Orelli family of painters and the wooden choir, carved in 1522.
After significant restoration, the church now glows as a cultural center, welcoming all with its renewed brilliance. Its last complete interior restoration, finished in 2012, ensures every visitor can experience its historical beauty.
